The brief simply was a question what type of landscape are we looking at and the contemplation lead us to an Indian garden. It was very difficult at first to define this brief in terms of a strong visual aesthetic, eventually we found value and attachment to what habits of ours as an Indian mold our garden, and it was the sensory experience. We all like to show off our gardens, but here there was more than just beautiful plants. We housed plant variety from different parts of the country, also the meaning behind each plant and their significance in cultural and ecological front was taken into consideration. The indoors seamlessly flows into the landscape space, in terms material and circulation of space.
The design of the house and the garden germs from this one existing mammoth boulder
and a centuries old Indian laurel tree hugging it. We already had a strong concept and
functional and visually all lines where aligned to this arrangement. This point of the tree
and the boulder was treated as the Bramh Sthan ( ब्रम्ह स्थान a principle of Vedic architecture
and community planning that designates the center point of a building or geographical
area which is the main power spot where energy is strongest )
The Outdoor space correspond to the indoor spaces and activities of the house, For example the outdoor space are divided as per the view point and the experiential quality with respect to the house. There is an entrance garden walk, the moon deck, the neem tree circle, the upper promenade walk, the core (Bramh Sthan ब्रम्ह स्थान a principle of Vedic architecture and community planning that designates the center point of a building or geographical area which is the main power spot where energy is strongest ), the water body deck and the living room spill out boulder deck along with four terrace gardens to continue the theme around the house.
For example as you walk the climb you come across Bauhinia tomentose, just plucking the leave and smelling this spice is an experience, as you go along further on the entrance walkway you will find the betel palm tree with pepper climber at the bottom, traditional grown together as a cultivation crop, finds place in this garden, simply because it make us nostalgic driving along the vast field of the countryside. Further as one reaches the entrance porch of the residence, you will come across Carissa carandas is a species of flowering shrub found in Coastal districts Karavali of Karnataka. It produces berry-sized fruits that are commonly used as a condiment in Indian pickles and spices, as the family was from konkan, our design found a place for this plant.
As in all our projects we love to explore material and experiment with a given set of skills
available at any given time and place. We love to customize design for each project so they
are unique and personalized. We created a finger print art work for a deck space with the
help of waste stone strips and gravels, which became the best hang out spot in winter mornings.
